Daniel Alejandro Mazal

Daniel Alejandro Mazal is Technical Director and Head of Medical Physics at the Quirónsalud Proton Therapy Center (Spain). After starting his career in Argentina, he joined the Curie Institute (France), where he developed high-precision radiotherapy techniques. His research included innovations in detector applications and contributions to European multicenter recommendations (e.g., Dynarad). He also designed specialized small-field collimators and micrometric immobilization systems, adopted clinically and by industry (e.g., Arplay).

Mr. Mazal pioneered one of the first clinical proton therapy programs, collaborating with physicians at the Curie Institute and public hospitals in Paris to treat small tumors, metastases, and arteriovenous malformations. In the 1990s, he led the transformation of a nuclear physics laboratory in Orsay (based on a 200 MeV synchrocyclotron) into a proton therapy clinical center. He subsequently led the installation of a turnkey proton therapy system in a €50 million project—the largest at the Curie Institute and in French radiotherapy at the time.

As Head of the Medical Service at the Curie Institute, he implemented cutting-edge radiotherapy technologies (e.g., Tomotherapy) at three clinical centers, supervising more than 100 professionals.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Mazal has advised international researchers at various stages of their careers. His areas of interest include dosimetry, instrumentation, image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), organ motion management, adaptive radiotherapy, minibeams, and FLASH irradiation.

With more than 150 scientific publications, Daniel Alejandro Mazal is a frequent speaker at international conferences and has organized leading events in his field.
